Cross my heart

“Mmm” Cheri responds to Savi’s hand on her breast. Her nipple strains against the fabric of her bra and begins to tingle. The sensation wakes up her lethargic brain. She pulls back from Savi’s lips with a start, “Oh my god.” Her hand goes to her lips and her eyes widen, “You kissed me!”

Savi smiles slowly, “You kissed back.”

Cheri gulps in horror, “Oh my god.” She turns away from Savi and squints into the lights looking for a way out. She finds a way out and rushes off the set.

“Wait!” Savi grabs Cheri’s shirt from the floor and runs after her, “Cheri! Wait!” As she passes Jimmy, she leans over, “You’re not using that picture. You know that, right?”

”Yes, yes, I know. Get her, okay? And make it quick.”

“Okay, I’ll do what I can. Where did she go?”

He points towards the changing rooms in the back, “Third from the left.”

“Thanks.” Savi heads in the direction of the door, but is cut off by Brie.

“Savi, that was so fucking hot.” Brie’s eyes travel the length of Savi’s torso, “I’ll continue the shoot with you if you want me to. I don’t mind gettin’ dirty with you.”

Savi sighs and rolls her eyes, “Brie, thanks. But I don’t think so.”

“Why?” Brie sounds mildly hurt.

“Because I don’t feel that way about you.” Savi maneuvers around the woman without much effort and approaches the door. She steps up close and listens carefully. She can hear Cheri sniffling behind the door. Savi hangs her head and instantly feels bad for moving so quickly. She takes a deep breath and presses her ear to the door as she knocks lightly. “Cheri?”

Cheri wipes her eyes and sniffles, “What?”

She turns her to the door. “It’s me. Please let me in.” When Savi doesn’t receive a quick answer, she adds, “I have your shirt.”

Cheri steps to the door and presses her palm against it, “I’m sorry I ran away.”

Savi smiles softly and lowers her voice a little since she feels Cheri closer to the door, “It’s alright. I understand. I’m sorry I moved so fast with you.”

“It wasn’t you, or how fast it moved, Savi. I just…” her voice trails off.

Savi waits for her to continue, but she doesn’t, “Cheri, please let me in.”

The door lock clicks. Savi steps back and stares at the knob, waiting on Cheri to open the door to her. She doesn’t want to barge in and assume she’s welcome.

Cheri’s movements behind the door mirror Savi’s. She waits for Savi to enter. She doesn’t want to seem desperate or give the illusion that she knows what she’s doing.

After waiting half a minute, Savi begins to silently beg Cheri to open the door. Please let me in, Cheri. Please. Just open the door. Come on. Let me in. She’s been waiting for what seems like hours now and she’s growing impatient.

Afraid that Savi’s gone now, Cheri opens the door just enough to peek out. Her eyes meet Savi’s and she can’t help but smile. She opens the door a little more, “Are you going to come in or what?”

“I was waiting on you to let me in. I don’t want to assume anything. You’re going to have to open that door for me.”

Cheri swings the door open wide, “It’s open. Please come in.”

Savi smiles shyly and steps past her into the room, “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Cheri locks the door and turns with her back pressed against it. She watches as Savi walks around the room slowly.

She takes note of the furniture in the small room. There are a couple of chairs, a vanity for make-up application, a small coffee table, and a couch. She takes a seat on the couch and folds the shirt neatly. Suddenly she’s very nervous. She makes eye contact with Cheri and tries to speak, “He-” she clears her throat and tries again, “Here’s your shirt.”

Cheri smiles and steps forward to take it from Savi’s outstretched hand, “Thank you.” She puts the shirt on the vanity and stands there with her hands on the back of the vanity chair and her back to her visitor. She takes a deep breath, “Savi, look, I’m sorr-”

Savi stands abruptly, “No, Cheri, I’m sorry.”

Cheri turns around on her heel, “No, please, let me. Please just let me say this, okay?” Savi shuts her mouth and nods. Cheri starts over, “I’m sorry that I ran away like that. It wasn’t that you kiss badly or that I was scared of people talking, or any of the reasons you’re thinking.” She wrings her hands and starts to pace, “See, I’m fine with being attracted to someone, male or female, but I’ve never had that attraction returned. At least, not physically.”

Savi’s face scrunches, “So what are you saying, Cheri? I don’t get it.”

Cheri sighs and comes to stand right in front of Savi, “I’m a-a virgin, Savi. I’ve never had sex. The furthest I’ve been with another human being was a spin-the-bottle game I played with a group of friends in college. And I was drunk at the time! I don’t think I’ve ever been this undressed with another person in the room before!”

Savi can’t believe this, “What? You’re kidding!”

“No, I’m not. I know it’s hard to believe, but I’m a 24 year old virgin! So it’s not that I’m scared of you specifically, I’m just…well…nervous! I wanted to kiss you. And I want to…do…more. But I’m nervous and unsure and …this is all foreign territory to me! Please don’t laugh at me!”

“Oh god, no! I wouldn’t do that!” Savi reaches out and takes the woman’s hand, “I think it’s great!”

“What?” Cheri’s face registers disbelief this time.

“I’ve been around the block and now it seems like nothing is ‘new’ anymore. And whoever gets the pleasure of being your first is going to get a treat! Every touch, caress, and kiss will be the first. That would be a huge honor for anyone!”

A blush rises on Cheri’s cheeks even as her voice and face lower, “But you already got my first touch. No one’s ever touched me there.”

Savi blushes too, “Yeah, I guess I did. Are you mad at me because I did that?”

Cheri shakes her head adamantly, “No, not at all! Like I said, I wanted you to. So much! But it scared me a little, that unfamiliar feeling of someone reciprocating.”

Savi nods, “I get it. I totally understand if you don’t want to continue the shoot.”

Cheri smiles, “But I do want to. I think I’m more prepared now. And since you know now you’ll be more aware of how I’m feeling and how fast to go. I’m not worried.”

“Right. I’ll be very sensitive, I promise.” Savi draws an ‘X’ over her chest, “Cross my heart.”

Cheri beams, “Alright then, let’s go!”

As they’re walking out the door, Savi turns, “Shirts on or off?”

“Let’s leave them off and just kinda start over. Is that alright?”

Savi nods, “Absolutely!” As Cheri walks back on set amidst the waiting make-up crew, Savi speaks to Jimmy, “Alright, we’re ready. We’re going to go slower. Don’t push, okay?”

Jimmy sighs, “Alright, I’m just glad you got her back out here! Let’s go!”

As the last of the make-up is being applied, someone in the back turns on Justin Timberlake. The song cues as Cheri and Savi stare at each other. The distance between them is a few feet, but it might as well be inches.

Once the beat to “Right for Me” starts, Cheri’s hips begin to move and she shimmies up to Savi. If she can keep Savi’s eyes connected to her own, she can forget how nervous the woman’s hands make her. When Savi’s right hand comes to rest behind her, just at the curve of her back, she inhales sharply. They groove a little more to the opening beat and Cheri sighs with relief that Savi’s hand seems to be staying put right there. I can handle this. This is fine. Damn is she gorgeous! Focus Cheri, focus! Savi’s head nods to the rhythm. She begins singing along to the song, but she’s singing to Cheri, there’s no doubt about it.

I got plans tonight

And you, you know what I like

And you’re approaching me right

But I gotta make sure it’s right for me

I got plans tonight

And you, you know what I like

And you’re approaching me right

But you gotta work that thing right for me

Little baby with the sun dress on

Looking so damn right you’re wrong

Make me wanna write my own little song for you

The way the thing just wiggle in the air

Turn around and then you flip your hair

I could think of a couple positions for you

Cheri turns around and presses against Savi. She wiggles her ass, making Savi smile a huge smile. Savi places her hands on Cheri’s hips and grinds against her, singing along.

You’re wasting no time talking to me

Must be something you want me to see

Well baby girl don’t mind me if I do

So take the stage just show me what you got

Feeling lucky let me touch your spot

Might be leaving with me before the night is through.

To Savi’s delight, Cheri whispers, “Maybe.”

I got plans tonight

And you, you know what I like

And you’re approaching me right

But I gotta make sure it’s right for me

I got plans tonight

And you, you know what I like

And you’re approaching me right

But you gotta work that thing right for me.

Knowing the next verse, Cheri turns around to face Savi and acts out the words to the song.

Your body’s saying things I ain’t never heard

You did the shake-shake and I kinda went beserk

Gotta give it to you girl you’re one of a kind

When you took my hand up so calm

Touched it to your cherry lip balm

A million nasty things went through my mind.

As Cheri kisses Savi’s fingers, Savi shakes her head, “Oohhh girl. Nasty, nasty things.” Cheri giggles as Savi picks up the lyrics again.

So baby tell me what you’re doing later on

‘Cause I’m thinking me and you could get alone

Baby girl don’t mind me if I do

So take the stage ‘n show me what you got

Feeling lucky let me touch yo’ spot

Might be leaving with me before the night is through

I got plans tonight

And you, you know what I like

And you’re approaching me right

But I gotta make sure it’s right for me

(You might be right for me)

I got plans tonight

And you, you know what I like

And you’re approaching me right

But you gotta work that thing right for me

(Yea, yea, work that thing right).

Savi shimmies away from Cheri as the woman turns around. They dance separately now. Cheri giggles as Savi begins to rap.

Yea Bubba come stumblin’ in

Get up! Huntin’ ‘betty’ with Justin and them

We must be the fliest of southerner men

That’s your girl?

Well buddy don’t fumble her then

You better get her! I’m totally into my zone

Come on girl, close your eyes pretend that you’re home

I will be puttin’ my signature on

That thing. I don’t even wanna finish the song,

lets go

I’m gettin’ discouraged with her

Too late now we’re friends, I surely prefer

Listen to every word that I slur

Other dudes be huggin’ and nourishin’ her, not me.

Savi steps up against Cheri again and speaks right to her as she stares deeply into the woman’s eyes.

I’ll bet you remember the night

Good ol’ Bubba K came into yo’ life

Test the water let me know if the temperature’s right,

Thank you ma’am, it’s certainly been a delight, uh-huh.

Cheri giggles as Savi kisses her hand. They finish out the song by dancing together in a more traditional fashion. Savi never stops singing and Cheri never stops smiling.

“I got plans tonight

And you, you know what I like

And you’re approaching me right

But I gotta make sure it’s right for me

(Make sure it’s right for me, yea)

I got plans tonight

And you, you know what I like

(Yea-yea) And you’re approaching me right

But you gotta work that thing right for me

(Work that thing right, yea)

I got plans tonight

And you, you know what I like

(You know what I like)

And you’re approaching me right

But I gotta make sure it’s right for me (Ah…)

I got plans tonight

And you, you know what I like

(You know what I like)

And you’re approaching me right

But you gotta work that thing right for me

(So right for me)

Hey, hey…

So right for me

You so right for me.

Cheri claps along with the rest of the group as Savi giggles and hides her face in the crook of Cheri’s neck. She wraps her arms around the embarrassed woman, “That was great. I didn’t know you could sing!”

The words are muffled, but Cheri can just make out what Savi says, “I can’t.”

“Yes you can! You just did! Look at me!” Savi lifts her bright red face and looks into Cheri’s eyes. “You sang beautifully. Don’t doubt that.”

Savi suddenly realizes that they’re standing very close together. Her arms are around Cheri’s waist, where they rest quite perfectly. Cheri’s hands cup Savi’s face. It feels really natural. And with “A Moment Like This” playing the background, Savi can’t think of another place she’d rather be. “Yes ma’am,” she says, with a smile.

“Good. I knew you’d see it my way!”

Jimmy’s voice cuts through their conversation, “Alright ladies, as great as that was, I need to get some sitting shots. Shirts on, please.”

Savi sighs as they release each other, “How boring!”

Cheri laughs, “Really!”

They don their shirts and take their places on the stools provided. The rest of the shoot goes off without incident. Once they’re finished, they are the first 2 released to go. Savi finishes packing her things before Cheri does. She sits out of sight and watches as Cheri painstakingly places each item back into her bag in its special spot. Savi can’t help smiling to herself. Oh man. I thought I had a crush before. She shakes her head. I was wrong.

Cheri turns and sees Savi staring at her. She pulls out her best accent, attempting to mock Savi’s own southern drawl, “What? Ain’t you never seen a girl packin’ b’fore?”

Savi chuckles and mumbles to herself, “It’s not a crush.” She sighs and walks towards the brunette, “That’s it. I’m in love.”
